As the holidays and peak engagement season draw near, I’m reminded of the day I got engaged – Christmas Day, 2002.

Stephen, at that time just my boyfriend, had come over to spend Christmas with us at my parents’ house. We had all exchanged gifts in the morning and were thinking of ideas of how to celebrate the day. Usually my family and I spent a quiet Christmas at home, so Stephen suggested that he and I take the train into Manhattan. And that’s exactly what we did.

Once we got into the city, we headed over to Starbucks for a coffee and the first thing we wanted to do was see the famous tree at Rockefeller Center. As we turned to cross the street toward the tree, I had no idea that Stephen was getting a little nervous when I touched the front of his sweater – little did I know that he had the ring in his shirt pocket! As we neared the tree, it started to snow lightly. Perfect timing. We got under the tree and Stephen pulled out a beautiful, simple marquis-shaped diamond solitaire. Someone on the street shouted, “he’s on his knee!” as a few Asian tourists took pictures. My first reaction was “Oh my God, are you serious?!” but of course, I said yes. 😉  We spent the rest of that beautiful day out in the snow, got tickets to “42nd Street” on Broadway, had dinner and called my parents- in that order. It was a Christmas we would never forget.

So, if this happens to be the year for you (and you just don’t know it yet!), enjoy the special moment.
